How to choose car speakers?

Car speakers are the last part and the most important section of car audio system, from which the sound sends out providing human beings enjoyment of listening and appreciation. Therefore, choosing better and suitable car speakers is the key to enjoying melodious car music.Here below are some regular ways to choose the right car audio speakers.

Characters can be judged from outside configuration.

The outside structures of car speakers reflect their characters, thus, when choosing car speakers,we should start from their outside configuration.There are deep and shallow sound basins deciding the effect of low sound. Sound basin made of fiber with rigid material is suitable for heavy music, and the one made of sprayed glue paper or PP with supple material is suitable for soft music.

The power of speaker is positively related to its voice coil size.

It is suggested to know some knowledge about performance standards and structural characteristics of car speakers when choosing them.In this way, you can effectively and explicitly choose car speakers.Then, what are the main performance standards?

Rated impedance (ohm): the value of speakers input signal voltage and current. Resistance: the pure impedance of audio signal which the speaker box embodies.The common  impedance value on the market is 3Ω,4Ω,6Ω,8Ω.In general, 4Ω is the most popular due to the specialty of car speakers’ low voltage. Low sound part can be with lower  impedance value, and through parallel connection the value can reach 0.5Ω.

Car speakers rated  impedance is different from that of home-used ones(commonly,8Ω and 16Ω). Speakers’ rated impedance matters a lot to matching with other appliance. When the rated  impedance unmatches with the appliance, there will be sound distortion and even the appliance can be destroyed. Therefore, the  impedance value of speakers should match with that of amplifier. 

Rated power(Watt):Internationally, there are two mark methods, one is called rated load power and the other is max load power. Usually, max load power is as several times as that of rated load power. It is better to explicit these different two methods that the accessories and appliances can express expected effect.

Sensitivity(dB):the sound pressure level (SPL) that is measured in a constant distance when the speaker inputs an audio signal with constant power. The higher the sensitivity of speaker box, the higher sonority when under the same power drive. That is why sensitivity matters a lot when apply small power amplifier. SPL indicates the standard of sound volume. Thus, sensitivity has nothing to do with sound quality and timbre, it is about speaker loudness.

Frequency response(dB): audio signal inputs into speaker under a constant voltage, speaker’s sound pressure will change along with frequency(when frequency increases, the sound pressure increases; when frequency decreases, the sound pressure decreases). Frequency response is a key standard to access whether the speaker is good quality or not. If dB value is low, the frequency response curve of speakers will be much flat which means the distortion is small. Thus, the music is better restored.

Obviously, the most perfect level of audio speakers is to send out a hearable frequency range, that is 20Hz-20kHz. However, the audio speaker unit is limited by material and configuration, it is nearly impossible to make speaker with metallic feeling in high sound and large amplitude in low sound.

The common car audio speakers are: high frequency speaker, mainly in ball type structure with small size made by neodymium magnet; mid and mid-bass speaker, mainly in cone basin structure with diameter between 4 inch to 7 inch; woofer and sub-woofer, mainly in cone basin structure with large-diameter sound coil and magnet unit, size ranges from 8 inch to 15 inch. As a matter of fact, to obtain full frequency signal, car owners reasonably match high, mid and woofer mutually due to their different frequency features.

Overall, you should try to test the speaker timbre no matter what brand you will choose, then you can find the right one you like.
